Welcome to The Lamproom Theatre Company

The Lamproom Theatre Company was formed in 1999 and is proudly based at The Lamproom Theatre in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

Our story is closely connected to the remarkable history of The Lamproom itself. In 1997, John Kelly purchased the derelict former Boys’ Club on Westgate, a historic building dating back to 1794. Working alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, supporters and theatre enthusiasts, he helped rescue and restore the building, creating what would become The Lamproom Theatre — fondly known as “The People’s Theatre.”

From that shared vision, The Lamproom Theatre Company was born.

Since our first production, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the company has continued to bring high-quality live theatre to local audiences. Over the years, we have built a strong reputation for staging a wide variety of productions, from powerful drama and timeless classics to laugh-out-loud comedy and exciting original work.

Performing exclusively at The Lamproom Theatre, we are proud to be part of a venue created by the community, for the community. Our productions have delighted audiences across Barnsley and gained recognition through national drama festivals, while our company continues to offer opportunities for people to perform, direct, write, support backstage, volunteer and become part of local theatre life.

On our website, you can find details of upcoming productions, audition opportunities, social gatherings, fundraising events, membership information and a rich archive of the many shows we have staged since the company began.

Whether you are looking forward to watching our next production, interested in joining us on stage or behind the scenes, or simply want to learn more about who we are, we are delighted to welcome you to The Lamproom Theatre Company.
